Chiomonte Visitor Centre

The new Chiomonte Visitor Centre is built using a combination of containers. The architectural concept reinterprets a typical construction-site object—the container—by transforming it into a space that guides visitors into the project through installations that explore the various themes related to the Lyon–Turin development: the base tunnel and the Chiomonte site, its historical background, specific infrastructure features, sustainability, the mountain environment and geological characteristics, construction sites and excavation, etc. At the heart of the design of the new facility is the possibility of using a geothermal source from the hot water encountered during tunnel excavation, to heat the centre in winter and cool it in summer throughout the construction period.
