This construction site stands out for its innovative management of excavated materials.

The Modane construction site extends over more than 30 km between Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and Modane and plays a central role in the French section of the Lyon–Turin rail link. It stands out for its innovative management of excavated materials, which are sorted and processed for reuse within the project, thereby reducing environmental impact and road transport.

More than 23 million tonnes of material will be processed through a 5 km conveyor network, involving up to 300 workers at peak activity.

Companies involved in the works

TELT awarded an €800 million contract to the GEME consortium, bringing together Eurovia Alpes (Savoie agency), Carrières du bassin rhônalpin, SATM, Granulats Vicat, Terélian (Mancuso agency), GIE GMM 73, Spie batignolles valérian and Spie batignolles malet. Project management is provided by Arcadis ESG, BG Ingenieurs Conseils, Lombardi Engineering, MST S.p.A and Amberg Infraestructuras.

A responsible approach

The project adopts an innovative approach to the management of excavated materials (MATEX) from the French side of the base tunnel: the materials are sorted, processed into aggregates or embankment material, and then reused within the project.

A network of more than 5 km of conveyor belts will connect ten sites between Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and Villarodin-Bourget, reducing environmental impact by limiting road transport. In total, 23 million tonnes of material will be processed, with a target of at least 50% reuse.
